Having a Coke with You

Having a Coke with You

is even more fun than going to San Sebastian, Irún, Hendaye, Biarritz, Bayonne
or being sick to my stomach on the Travesera de Gracia in Barcelona
partly because in your orange shirt you look like a better happier St. Sebastian
partly because of my love for you, partly because of your love for yoghurt
partly because of the fluorescent orange tulips around the birches
partly because of the secrecy our smiles take on before people and statuary
it is hard to believe when I’m with you that there can be anything as still
as solemn as unpleasantly definitive as statuary when right in front of it
in the warm New York 4 o’clock light we are drifting back and forth
between each other like a tree breathing through its spectacles

and the portrait show seems to have no faces in it at all, just paint
you suddenly wonder why in the world anyone ever did them

I look
at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world
except possibly for the Polish Rider occasionally and anyway it’s in the Frick
which thank heavens you haven’t gone to yet so we can go together the first time
and the fact that you move so beautifully more or less takes care of Futurism
just as at home I never think of the Nude Descending a Staircase or
at a rehearsal a single drawing of Leonardo or Michelangelo that used to wow me
and what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them
when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank
or for that matter Marino Marini when he didn’t pick the rider as carefully
as the horse

it seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience
which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I am telling you about it

  1. Hi Nicole, It's Christian! I thought your presentation was very straight forward, and delivered information in the simplest way possible. I also like how the citations are done with hyperlinks, everyone doesn't have to read every single annotation. Using pictures was very smart on your part because this whole poem is about images! You really helped the reader understand more about this poem. If I had a critique, it would be that all of the annotations are at the bottom of this page. That is fine, considering you only need to look at the poem and click hyperlinks to go to the right annotation, but the first time I looked at the webpage I was a little bit overwhelmed by it's length. If you could figure out a way to keep the annotations on a seperate page, that would be great. Overall, I really loved this presentation and I thought it was exactly what Kaiserman was looking for: Great job Nicole.

  2. Hey, so I tried to comment on this once, but it didn't post.... Anyway, I thought the blog was clear and accurate. At first I was confused as to why all the pictures were after the poem, but once I used the links it all made sense. I like that you link your own pages instead of other sights, I allowed your own voice to show through in the annotations. The only thing that I thought you needed to improve on was the display. I feel like you could have added more personality to the blog, my changing the background to fit in with the theme of the poem. Overall, the blog was easy to navigate and successfully annotates the poem. :-)

  3. So I thought that the links withing the poem was a great way to be directed to information that I had no idea of. It got me to understand more about the poem and it was very direct. The links provide enough information for me and its not a load of reading for one topic. As I scroll down I see the same information. I already have the links provided to direct me to other pages so I dont see much of a reason for it to be down there again. I think you did a great job in your work.
